Ram . Changing transmission fluid on high mileage vehicle?

Changing transmission fluid on high mileage vehicle? I have recently purchased a 1999 Lincoln Continental car with 118500 miles on it. As it is a used car, I do not know whether the previous owners have done any transmission fluid change. I got a routine inspection done for the car from a reputed mechanic and they recommended changing the transmission fluid as it was brownish in colour. I will definitely not do a transmission flush......but would like experts opinion on whether I should ; 1) do the traditional method of transmission fluid drain, refill and change the filter OR 2) don't do anything at all since the car is not giving any problems. Are there any risk factors in getting a transmission fluid change for a high mileage vehicle where history of any transmission fluid change is not known. car insurance.

Ram . How to Replace a Starter Solenoid on a Beretta

The starter solenoid in a Chevrolet Beretta is easier to replace than in most other models because the solenoid is located on the outside of the starter. You will have to pull the starter out of the engine to perform the change, but you can do it yourself with a wrench set and a jack, saving you money and time.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Floor jack
Two jack stands
Boxed wrench set

Step by Step :
1
Lift the Beretta with jack stands to allow room under the engine. To do this, jack the front of the vehicle off the ground with a floor jack and place the floor jacks under the subframe. Lower the Beretta onto the jack stands. If you do not have jack stands, you can lift the front of the vehicle by driving it onto a set of front-end ramps.
2
Remove the negative battery cable and then remove the positive battery cable. Wrap the metal connector of the positive cable with a shop towel to prevent it from accidentally touching the positive battery terminal. If the positive battery cable is connected, the starter has power even if the ground is disconnected. The starter grounds directly to the engine thus it does not use the battery ground.
3
Locate the starter underneath the car on the driver side of the vehicle. It connects to the engine block. It has one large wire extending from the back, it’s round in shape and measures approximately 8 inches long.
4
Remove the large wire from the starter with a boxed wrench and push the wire upward, out of your way.
5
Locate the four bolts in each corner of the starter base plate. Remove the bolts with a boxed wrench. Starter removal is necessary to remove the starter solenoid because the solenoid is located on top of the starter and is inaccessible without starter removal.
6
Pull straight out on the starter to separate the mesh between the starter gear and the flywheel. Inspect the mating surfaces for shims. They are reused during installation.
7
Locate the round tubular solenoid on the top side of the starter. Remove the two bolts that secure the solenoid to the starter with a boxed wrench. Replace with the new solenoid and secure it with the original bolts.
8
Place any shims on the base plate of the starter and then place the starter back into the engine. Slide it straight in so the gears mesh. Turn the starter to line up the bolt holes in the base plate and the engine block. Secure the starter using the original bolts.
9
Reconnect the large wire to the back of the starter using the original securing nut.

Step by Step :
10
Reconnect the positive battery cable to the battery and then connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Remove the vehicle from the jack stands.

Ram . How to Test the Starter Solenoid on a Ford Explorer

The easiest way to troubleshoot a starter solenoid on a Ford Explorer is to eliminate the use of the Explorer’s battery and start the vehicle right from the starter. To do this, you have to put auxiliary power to the starter with a pair of jumper cables and a known working vehicle. This process tells you if the starter is defective or if the battery or cabling is defective.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Front-end ramps
Adjustable wrench
Battery jumper cables
Working vehicle

Step by Step :
1
Place the Ford Explorer onto a set of front-end ramps and secure the parking break. If the Ranger has a suspension lift kit installed and the underneath of the vehicle is accessible without driving onto ramps, skip this step.
2
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery. Lift the battery out of the vehicle and place it off to the side. This prevents the cables from accidentally touching the battery terminals while you work on the Explorer.
3
Locate the starter under the Explorer on the driver side of the vehicle. It is a long cylindrical tube connected to the engine block. It is approximately 8 inches in length with two large wires extending from it.
4
Place the red battery jumper cable on the positive wire connector located on the back of the starter. Double-check that the wire that extends from the wire connector goes to the positive battery cable. Place the ground battery jumper cable onto the chassis of the vehicle.
5
Place the other end of the positive battery jumper cable onto the positive terminal of a working vehicle. Place the ground battery jumper cable onto the negative battery terminal of the working vehicle.
6
Attempt to start the Explorer. If it starts, the issue is with the battery or cabling that extend to the starter solenoid. If the Explorer still fails to turn over or crank, the issue is with the starter and it requires replacement.

On conventional diesels, the air comes in through an air cleaner that's quite similar to those in ordinary vehicles. However, turbochargers have been developed that ram greater volumes of air into the cylinders and may provide greater power and fuel economy under optimum conditions. A turbocharger can increase the power on a diesel vehicle by 50 percent while lowering its fuel consumption by 20 to 25 percent! (See "Turbocharging" in Chapter 6 for details.) 6. As you've read, turning the key started the glow plugs warming up the air in the cylinders. On many engines, the glow plugs are located right in the combustion chambers of the cylinders. On others, they have been placed in little precombustion chambers (refer to Figure 7-2), which the glow plugs can heat more quickly and easily. 7. From here, combustion spreads from the smaller amount of fuel that's placed under pressure in the precombustion chamber to the fuel and air in the combustion chamber itself. Now take a closer look at each step of the power cycle that converts all this 349 Car Insurance dodge charger 2009 rtsedan4d 39397

into power to drive the vehicle. The diesel four-stroke pouter cycle Although some diesel engines operate with two-stroke power cycles, chances are that the vehicles you'll encounter use a four-stroke power cycle, which is comparable to the power cycle of a gasoline engine (see Chapter 6). The following explains how the diesel's four-stroke power cycle works: I f Stroke 1 — Intake stroke (see Figure 7-7): The piston descends, the intake valve opens, and air is drawn into the cylinder. . Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles Figure 7-7: Intake stroke.

Stroke 2 — Compression stroke (see Figure 7-8): The intake and exhaust valves are closed as the piston moves upward and places the air under extreme pressure. As the pressure increases, the air heats up to the flash point (the point at which it causes the fuel to undergo sponta neous combustion). Just before that point is reached, fuel injectors spray fuel into the combustion chambers at the precise instant when ignition is to take place. Figure 7-8: Compression stroke. Stroke 3 — Power stroke (see Figure 7-9): With intake and exhaust valves closed, the fuel ignites, and combustion forces the piston down. This driving power is transmitted through the transmission and the rest of the drive train to the wheels, which causes the vehicle to move.

Figure 7-10: Exhaust stroke. Diesel fuel Diesel engines run on diesel fuel, which is more efficient than gasoline because it contains 10 percent more energy per gallon than gasoline does. It is also safer than gasoline because its vapors don't explode or ignite as easily as gasoline does. Diesel fuel (sometimes called diesel oil) comes in two grades: Diesel #1 and Diesel #2 (or 1-D and 2-D). Just as gasoline is rated by its octane, diesel fuel is rated by its cetane, which indicates how easy it is to ignite and how fast it will burn. (The higher the cetane number, the more volatile the fuel.) Most diesel vehicles use fuel with a rating of 40 to 55. Most diesel automakers specify Diesel #2 for normal driving conditions. Truckers use Diesel #2 to carry heavy loads for long distances at sustained speeds because it's less volatile than #1 and provides greater fuel economy.

Diesel fuel is also measured by its viscosity, which has to do with its thickness and ability to flow. Like any oil, diesel fuel gets thicker and cloudier at lower temperatures. Under extreme conditions, this fuel can become a gel and refuse to flow at all. Diesel #1 flows more easily than Diesel #2, so it's more efficient at lower temperatures. The two types of oil can be blended, and most service stations offer diesel fuel blended for local weather conditions. If you plan to drive in very cold weather, choose diesel fuel rated at least 10 degrees lower than the coldest temperatures you expect to encounter. Consult your owner's manual for specifics. Diesel fuel emissions have been found to be extremely toxic to humans and other living things. Until safer forms of this fuel are developed, be careful not to inhale the fumes while you're pumping it into your fuel tank. Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles 1 A 1 The good news is that safer diesel fuels are being developed. The top contender, Fischer-Tropsch, is a liquefied natural gas that contains no sulfur and can be used in conventional diesel engines. With the proper converter, it has the potential to be as clean as natural gas. This fuel would be very expensive to create and market, so if you really love diesel engines, it would be wise to lobby for government subsidies and incentives to make this fuel (or compara-. ble diesel fuels) affordable. For more about this topic, see "Designer diesel," later in this chapter. The diesel fuel sold at truck stops is often cheaper than at service stations, and the fuel is fresher, too. Freshness is important because diesel fuel can easily become contaminated by the water vapor that condenses in fuel tanks, and by fungus and other microbes that can clog filters and fuel injectors. <\V ^"~~~ ^ vo u *mc* y°urseM at a station that arouses your suspicions, look for slimy stuff on the nozzle of the fuel pump. Muscling a small vehicle into a crowd of big rigs isn't easy! The electrical system Diesels require more stored energy for starting than conventional vehicles do, especially on cold days. Instead of just using the battery to enable the starter to crank the engine, as gasoline-powered engines do, a diesel must have sufficient power to enable the glow plugs to warm the combustion chambers and then must build up enough heat and compression in the cylinders to ignite the fuel. For this reason, diesels must possess considerably more battery capacity than conventional vehicles. Some diesels come equipped with two batteries, while others feature a single oversized battery, which may be more than 50 percent bigger than one found on a conventional car.
